5 Unexpected Allergy Sources That Are Impacting Your Skin

How many times a day do you wash your face and continue to experience breakouts? You have tried every face mask, moisturizer, or scrub in the book, but nothing seems to work.

You may not be aware that common household items and other objects in our daily environments can irritate sensitive skin. Many of us are aware of our personal allergy triggers, such as animal hair or pollen. Still, there are other allergy sources people might not know that they should avoid.

The following day-to-day encounters may be causing our skin to become irritated.

1. Laundry Detergents and Dryer Sheets

Certain detergents and dryer sheets can contain chemicals that can transfer to our clothes during the process of washing and drying. Some people may be allergic to these chemicals and can develop a skin rash. If you want to avoid allergic skin reactions, it's best to use fragrance and dye-free detergents and dryer sheets. If you are a DIY kind of person, you can make homemade laundry detergent to reduce any chances of skin irritation.

2. Sunscreen

If you have fair skin and want to avoid getting a nasty sunburn, you probably buy sunscreens that are SPF 70+ to protect your skin from the sun at all costs. While wearing sunscreen is generally a smart idea, certain sunscreens do cause allergic reactions for some people. This problem is more likely to occur with sunscreen products that contain PABA-based chemicals. When shopping for sunscreen, look for products with the label "PABA-Free" on the front of the bottle.

3. Upholstered Furniture

Stuffed upholstered furniture in your home provides a comfy residence for dust mites. These dust mites can migrate to your skin and cause it to become irritated and itchy. Be sure that you are vacuuming your furniture often to rid your furniture of those nasty mites. Or, you can try switching to leather or vinyl upholstery when shopping for furniture.

4. Fall Leaves

Fall leaves are what make the colors of fall so beautiful. Jumping into a big pile of freshly raked leaves is a great fall activity. On the downside, these leaves are a welcoming spot for ragweed pollen, outdoor molds, and other allergens to accumulate. When walking through the leaves on the street, your shoes and clothes act as a magnet to these allergens. Before you know it, these allergens have traveled into your home. Remember to take your shoes and all other outerwear off at the door.

5. Heat

Contrary to popular belief, heat rashes don't actually occur from exposure to heat. These rashes occur as your body's response to excessive sweating. Your sweat ducts can become trapped due to clothing or heavy moisturizers. When these ducts become clogged, they become irritated, and rashes appear. Try to wear breathable clothing and light skin moisturizers.

Simply watching what you expose your skin to every day can help it stay healthy and happy. If you or someone in your family has a problem with irritated skin, try following one or more of these tips, and see if it makes a difference.
